Ban Bang Sadet in Ang Thong is a rewarding stop if you enjoy handmade souvenirs and the small details of everyday Thai life. At the village’s Court Doll Center, miniature clay figures turn familiar activities into scenes you can study up close. It suits craft enthusiasts and families whose children enjoy watching how things are made.
The center is in the grounds of Wat Tha Sutthawat, in Bang Sadet subdistrict, Pa Mok district. Its Thai name, ศูนย์ตุ๊กตาชาววังบ้านบางเสด็จ, is useful to keep on your phone when asking for directions. The project began in 1976 under Queen Sirikit’s initiative to give villagers a supplementary occupation.
Small figures, plenty to notice
The appeal lies in the subjects as much as the scale. Displays include figures showing traditional daily life and children’s games, alongside miniature Thai fruit. Look closely at a figure’s posture, the way a tiny object is shaped, and the painted details that bring a scene together.
Clay shaping, firing and painting are part of the craft. The center is a place to see demonstrations and browse finished pieces for sale, so it is worth asking which stage of the process is being shown during your visit. Buying a piece also supports the community’s craft work.
For children, the visit can become a simple observation game: choose a miniature, work out what it represents, then compare it with the real object or activity. Ask before touching displays or photographing an artisan at work.
Plan around the demonstration
Contact the center before making a special journey, particularly if you want a demonstration or a hands-on activity. Confirm the day’s opening arrangements, what can be booked, the cost and whether any work you make can be taken home that day. Arrange any hands-on session in advance.
The official regional tourism listing gives 061-494-0538 as a contact number. Because the center shares a temple setting, wear clothing suitable for temple grounds. If you buy fragile miniatures, ask for protective wrapping and keep them where luggage will not crush them.
